Best Baseball Academies for Pitchers

There is no independently audited ranking of "best" academies for pitchers, and any list that claims otherwise is presenting opinion as fact. What follows instead is a breakdown of the factors that genuinely differentiate pitching development between programs, with verified examples of academies that meet each factor — so you can evaluate a specific program against real criteria rather than a marketing claim.

Factor 1: Ball-Flight Measurement Technology

Academies with verified HitTrax and TrackMan facility access:

  • 5 Tool Prospects (Chandler, AZ)
  • Trosky Academy Rock Hill (Rock Hill, SC)

Both are confirmed directly through official facility listings. No academy in the current directory has confirmed Rapsodo as a structured facility feature — where Rapsodo is mentioned in an academy's marketing (as with a coach's Rapsodo certification), treat it as a coaching credential rather than a confirmed facility system until the academy verifies otherwise.

Factor 2: Pitching-Specific Coaching Credentials

Generic "professional playing experience" on a coaching staff page doesn't tell you whether that experience was as a pitcher, position player, or in a front-office role. For pitching development specifically, look for coaches whose background is explicitly pitching-focused:

A3 Trojans (Tampa, FL): Casey Mulholland, the academy's Pitching Lab Director, played in the Los Angeles Dodgers organization and at Ole Miss and the University of South Florida. He founded Kinetic Pro Performance, A3's dedicated pitching lab partner — a specialization most Tier 1 or Tier 2 programs don't have a named equivalent for.

PRO5 Baseball Academy (Holly Springs, NC): Two staff members have pitching-specific professional backgrounds — Mack Jenkins, a former MLB pitching coach with the Cincinnati Reds organization, and Jonathan Johnson, a former Houston Astros starting pitcher.

The distinction matters: a hitting instructor with a strong professional playing career is a real asset to a program, but is not the same credential as a coach whose specific professional role was pitching development or pitching coaching.

Factor 3: Bullpen and Mound Access

Cage time is not the same as mound time. A program heavy on batting-cage infrastructure but light on dedicated bullpen mounds limits how often a pitcher can work on mechanics under game-realistic conditions.

5 Tool Prospects (Chandler, AZ) explicitly lists 2 bullpens with clay mounds as part of its facility, alongside 8 batting cages — a program that has invested specifically in pitcher-facing infrastructure rather than only hitting infrastructure.

When evaluating any program, ask directly: how many dedicated bullpen mounds exist, and how much of a pitcher's weekly schedule is guaranteed mound time versus flat-ground or cage work?

Questions to Ask Any Program About Pitching Development Specifically

  1. Does the coaching staff include someone whose professional background is specifically pitching (not just "professional baseball experience" broadly)?
  2. What ball-flight measurement technology is available, and is it a confirmed facility feature or a coach's personal certification?
  3. How many dedicated bullpen mounds are available, and how is mound time scheduled across the roster?
  4. How often is pitching-specific data (velocity, spin rate, movement) collected and shared with the athlete directly, not just the coaching staff?
  5. What is the program's approach to pitch count and arm-care management across a competitive season that may include 50+ games?

None of the factors above should be evaluated in isolation — a program strong on technology but thin on pitching-specific coaching credentials is a different (and generally weaker) offer than one strong on both. Use these factors together when comparing specific programs.
